Using chemicals or other hazardous substances at work can put people's health at risk, so the law requires employers to control exposure to hazardous substances. A quarter of all employees regularly use hazardous substances such as chemicals, flammable liquids and gases in their work. Unsafe use and handling of hazardous substances can cause cancer, skin disease, poisoning and respiratory illness.
